Of course the 2008 World Junior Fast Pitch Championship will be the hottest ticket in town from June 20 – 29, but Whitehorse and its’ surrounding area has a ton of other great events happening throughout the length of the championship.

  • Sunstroke Music Festival/Solstice Festival (June 20-21, 2008): Kicking off Whitehorse’s yearly Solstice Festival, the 3rd annual Sunstroke Music Festival promises to be bigger and louder than ever before. Music lovers of all ages will enjoy the day-long festivities at Shipyards Park on the waterfront.
The Solstice weekend continues on Saturday the 21st with l’Association Franco-Yukonaise’s Saint-Jean-Baptist celebrations.
  • Bike Races (June 21 & June 28, 2008): Two major annual bike races are taking place during the tournament. The Kluane to Chilkat International bike race will see solo riders and teams of two, four or eight battle the beautiful highway from Haines Junction, YT to Haines, AK.

The following weekend, Whitehorse’s Copperbelt Railway stages the 24 hours of light bike race where teams will compete to see how many laps they can ride on a grueling course in 24 hours.
  • National Aboriginal Day and Yukon First Nations Art Festival (June 21-27, 2008): SYANA’s 1st Annual First Nations Arts Festival at Whitehorse’s Old Firehall in First Avenue will feature artists from each Yukon community plus a variety of workshops over the week-long festival. The festival coincides nicely with National Aboriginal Day on Sunday, June 22, 2008.
  • Yukon River Quest (June 25-29, 2008): This canoe/kayak race starts on Main Street in downtown Whitehorse and ends on the banks of the Yukon River in historic Dawson City. This race has grown from eight teams in its’ inaugural year to nearly 100 for this year’s installment. Catch the start on June 25, 2008.

Also, make time to take in some of Whitehorse’s landmarks and museums such as the S.S Klondike, the Wildlife Preserve, the Takhini Hotsprings, the Beringia Centre and the MacBride Museum to name a few. For more information on these and other exciting Whitehorse landmarks, drop by the Visitor Information Centre at 2121-2nd Avenue.
